An evening against poverty

An evening against poverty

Last week I went to a very interesting meeting organised by 'Global Poverty Project', www.globalpovertyproject.com  At least 75% of the 100+ audience there were students and challenged by the messages they heard. The challenges talked about ranged from keeping informed about the levels of poverty that actually exist throughout the world to being prepared to write to politicians at home and in the appropriate countries to buying Fair Trade products and encouraging local traders to stock Fair Trade products (I know a lot now are) and for others to use them i.e. restaurants, tea rooms etc.

Sometimes we all feel the problem is too great, and yet I left feeling really encouraged that concerned people are starting to make a difference. The Global Poverty Project seeks to invigorate the global movement to take concerted action on poverty through the presentation '1.4 billion reasons'. Many issues were covered with lots of up-to-date statistics. Probably the whole audience was most surprised by the facts showing over 50% of the Millennium Goals HAVE already been reached.

If you look on the above website and go to 'events' you will be able to see where the Global Poverty Project are holding their next meetings. The visuals used in the presentation are very informative and easy to read. Having a hearing problem it was a real pleasure to be able to hear even the spoken word as well as the film clips so clearly in the room.

Send a Cow shares many values with the GPP, and when it comes to advocacy, the more voices there are on these matters the better it is for all those who are suffering.
