Get Together
Singing, dancing and getting together are all important parts of community life in Africa. How about celebrating community spirit and togetherness here too and get your friends round for Send a Cow?
We all love a good film and sing song every now and again so why not organise a night of entertainment? You could have an African themed evening, or a nostalgia night to celebrate your favourite era and help raise vital funds for Africa at the same time.
It’s easy to get started:
• Pick an era you know and love
• Choose some classic films and some great music
• Maybe organise a quiz – there’s plenty online
• Invite your friends round and let the fun begin!
You could even make it fancy dress and have a prize for the best costume!
Some inspiration:
60s – Bonnie and Clyde, Butch Cassidy, The Graduate
Chuck Berry, The Beatles, The Monkees
70s – Rocky, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Simon and Garfunkle, John Denver, Rod Stewart
80s – The Goonies, Labyrinth, Out of Africa, The Breakfast Club, ET
Lionel Ritchie, Tina Tuner, Billy Joel
If everyone donates what they would have spent had they gone out that evening - the price of a cinema ticket, a meal or even just a few drinks at the pub - you’ll be surprised how much you can make.
Just £20 will provide a group training session on how to build fuel saving stoves. These use 70% less firewood, saving energy and eyesight.
Or £45 will provide a family with beehives , providing honey and wax to sell and pollen to fertilise important food plants.
Other ideas:
• Hold a ‘Pass it on’ Party – everyone pays £5/£10 entrance, brings things they no longer want and then swaps!
• Get face painting at work or school with a Funny Face Day. How about a chicken or a goat? Have a collection for Send a Cow and a prize for the funniest face!
• If you want to go all out, then why not organise a street party? Put up some bunting, get everyone to bring some food and make a donation to Send a Cow. Every £10 donation will provide a lamb to a poor family in Africa.
