Wishing you a Happy Easter
04.04.2010
As we approach Easter, and enjoy the onset of Spring (although it seems to have disappeared in the UK this week!), it is an important time to think of those who live in desperate need.
Easter is a time of re-birth, and Spring brings new life into the world. At Send a Cow we offer African families a new chance at life. Our work, involving skills training and gifts of livestock and seeds, can revolutionise people’s lives and lift them out of poverty for good.
Following Easter this year, World Health Day falls on 7th April which focuses our attention to the inequalities of health provision across the globe. Send a Cow’s work is proven to produce happier and healthier lives. Our sustainable agricultural techniques provide people with a balanced diet - a variety of vegetables and a ready supply of protein through milk, eggs or meat. We teach simple hygienic practices which help prevent the spread of disease. Also, importantly, income earned from the sale of surplus produce allows families to buy much needed medication or vital ARV drugs to help fight HIV.
One Ugandan lady we work with is Gertrude Wanjei who lives with her husband Peter. Despite being elderly, they look after eight children under the age of 16. Gertrude received a cow from us in 2002 and she is now looking after its offspring. She has also undertaken a variety of training courses in sustainable agriculture such as animal husbandry and fodder. She says “the training was precious to me! I have learnt about nutrition and how to feed the family.”
With such a large number of mouths to feed, Gertrude needed all the help she could get. She describes her life before receiving Send a Cow assistance. “Before we suffered from malaria, measles, flu and colds. Our bedding was a sorry state and we slept without mattresses, Our house was thatch and mud”.
“Now I am no longer sickly. We have an income so we can afford mosquito nets. We eat and sell a balanced diet of vegetables and crops. I can even bank some of my income. I couldn’t have dreamed of this before Send a Cow”.
This Easter, and on World Health Day, remember that there are thousands of people like Gertrude waiting to work with us to improve their lives for the better. Please give us your continued support and prayers to make this happen.
Wishing you all a very Happy Easter.
