Today, the world’s population officially hits seven billion.

For many of us, the decision to have children is made carefully and mutually. For others, including many of the families in Africa that we support, there is little, if any, choice. Cultural traditions, lack of education, limited access to family planning services, and the threat of infant mortality make for a very different reality.

Send a Cow’s programmes aim to enable…

For many of the families we work with in Africa, the daily challenges of food security are compounded by the ever present threat of AIDS. In Lesotho, Western Kenya and Rwanda in particular, adults who would normally be working, bringing up children and caring for the elderly are too ill to carry on.

It’s a simple fact, but for anti –retroviral medication to work, people need to be well nourished. Our agricultural…

Members of the Girigisabo group in Rwanda have seen dramatic improvements in their lives since starting work with Send a Cow in 2008.

All members had previously suffered. As subsistence farmers growing small amounts of basic vegetables, many found it difficult to provide their families with enough food to eat, yet alone any surplus to sell to bring in a much needed income. Indeed, crop production had even started to fall as, over time, the soil lost its nutrients.

In many cases in Africa, it is the women who have to lead the household. More often than not, it is the grandmothers who are left to look after their own children’s children, putting food on the table day to day, at a time of their life when they should be being looked after themselves.
