Recognising Cameroon for Women's World Day of Prayer
08.03.2010
Today we recognise Women's World Day of Prayer, which this year is dedicated to the plight of struggling families in Cameroon, where Send a Cow works.
This day will see the coming together of over three million people worldwide, using a service prepared by women in Cameroon.
Further information on the day and services being held near you can be found here.
Cameroon can be called an ‘Africa in miniature’ – its people and climate are varied from equatorial rainforests to semi-deserts. Send a Cow runs projects in the poorest region, the Far North Province, where months of drought are followed by intense downpours.
To prepare for these acute climatic changes, we train groups in water harvesting, to allow them to have enough water to drink throughout the year. We also provide training in sustainable farming practices, showing farmers how to integrate crops with livestock for a steady food supply.
Our volunteers are gathering together across the country, including Bruce Kent who is giving a talk in Tavistock’s Catholic Church. We ask you to join in our prayers for Cameroon:
- Please pray for the groups as they grow and work together. In particular, please pray that the groups can put into practice all that they learn from the training sessions even when the practices are very different to the ways they have been farming and living in the past. May the people in the groups be empowered to change their own situation.
- Thank God for the increased production of crops and vegetables due to the Send a Cow training for families. This has meant they have seen improved heath and have been able to open their homes to destitute children in the community.
- Please pray for the women in Cameroon, as they can feel inferior and may have very little standing or voice in the community. Pray that the gender and social development work done by the team will bring empowerment to the women and change the attitudes of men in the community.
