Send a Cow was set up in 1988 by a group of Christian farmers who wanted to help people struggling to rebuild their lives in Uganda following years of conflict. They decided to take direct practical action by donating cows from their own herds to these farmers to help them start again.
The charity now works in ten African countries, providing practical assistance to some of the poorest in the community including AIDS orphans, disabled people and widows - helping them to overcome poverty and hunger through farming.
We provide training in sustainable natural farming techniques and gifts such as livestock, seeds and trees. All the assistance we give is now locally sourced within Africa and suited to the particular needs of each group we are working with.
Gifts of livestock provide families with milk, eggs, meat and offspring to sell. They also provide manure and urine to revitalise exhausted soils, boosting crop yields by as much as four times and enabling farmers to grow vegetables to eat and sell. The training we give helps farmers to protect their environment, ensuring a better future for themselves and their family.
Every family that Send a Cow helps passes that help on in some way - whether from livestock (by giving the first female offspring) or a portion of the first harvest.
Knowledge, too, is passed on from farmer to farmer so that whole communities can be trained.
In fact for every one person we are able to help directly, another 9 will benefit!
