Sunflowers & tip-taps
You can add all sorts of things to your school's African garden to bring even more learning, colour and interest.
Sponsored Sunflowers
Sunflowers are a great addition to any garden and are easy to grow, often with very impressive results. They are grown by many Send a Cow African farmers as the stalks can be used for firewood and the seeds can be used in a cow 'cake', a favourite treat for African cows!
If you’d like to grow sunflowers, we’ve put together a 'Sponsor a Sunflower' kit to make things easy for you. Children can grow them, find out why farmers use them, and raise money for African families at the same time – perfect!
Sunflower Kits
Our kits contain: two seed types; 10 coir pots; information on sunflowers, a mini-hessian sack for your most promising specimen, and a sponsor form. Kits are available at £5 each* - call 01225 874222 to order and find related resources, such as a gallery of pictures online.
The tallest sunflowers grown at home or at school can be entered into our African Gardens Competition; send your official entry form in by 19th September!
Tip Tap handwashers
These ingenious African hand-washers help keep hygiene levels high in Africa. Often situated outside a loo or by a cowshed, they are an essential part of Send a Cow training.
Tip Taps are also an easy thing for children to make and use here in the UK. Kids can get really creative and come up with many different designs, making it lots of fun. Don’t forget to enter particularly good ideas in our 'Best Tip-Tap' category in the African Gardens competition!
When you order any of our kits, you'll find a Tip-Tap sheet included, showing how to build one. You can also find lots of related resources on our Cowfiles.com site too, including pictures of Tip-Taps in action!
*Please note that we can only send our African Gardens kits to UK addresses.
